3_16_1021

Is John 3:16 the most famous verse in the Bible? You could easily make that case. It’s a great simple expression of God’s love commonly called “the Gospel in a nutshell”. Many people have found it easy and worthwhile to memorize. You sometimes even see it on signs held up at sporting events. It’s so familiar that I find myself paying attention to other Bible “3:16” verses just because they are 3:16. If you look up chapter 3, verse 16 in every New Testament book, you’ll notice that quite a number of them are worth memorizing (since the Old Testament passages tend to be parts of stories, the verses don’t stand alone as well).

Matthew
And when Jesus was baptized, immediately He went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on Him

Luke
John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

John
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

1 Corinthians
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?

2 Corinthians
But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed.

Galatians
Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ.

Philippians
Only let us hold true to what we have attained.

Colossians
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

2 Thessalonians
Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.

1 Timothy
Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

2 Timothy
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

James
For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.

1 John
By this we know love, that He laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.

Revelation
So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.

Trust me this does NOT reveal some sort of numerological code built into the chapters and verse (which were added long after the inspiration of the original texts). There are plenty of 3:16 verses that have less impact or make little sense because they’re part of a longer thought. For example…

Genesis
To the woman He said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

1 Kings
Then two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him.

Mark
He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter)

Romans
in their paths are ruin and misery

Ephesians
that according to the riches of His glory He may grant you to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in your inner being,

1 Peter
having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

2 Peter
as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures

Jude
Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.
