This week is Ascension Day!

I love Ascension Day. Ascension Day is like your favorite team winning the SuperBowl, World Series, AND Stanley Cup when nobody expected them to even make the playoffs. It's like one of your professors winning a Pulitzer, a Nobel Prize, and an Olympic Gold Medal. It's like your best friend becoming the owner of your favorite sports team, your favorite restaurant, and the nearest movie theater.

Ascension Day is the celebration of all glory and power being given to our hero, teacher, and friend, Jesus Christ. It's a day for remembering and rejoicing in the ascendancy and supremacy of Jesus as we celebrate His victory and the rewards of that victory.

"And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth." — Philippians 2:8-10

How cool is that? Ascension Day means our Lord is THE Lord. Our teacher is wisdom itself. We have the best of friends in the highest of places. It's the ultimate "top that!" How can anyone or anything "one up" ascending into heaven? There isn't anything higher than that! Ascension Day means that Jesus wins, at life, at everything, He is the master. It is a day for cheering.

Ascension at Bethlehem

For the first several years I was here, we (like most churches) didn't celebrate on Ascension Day. We picked it up on the next Sunday because most people don't show up for a Thursday service. I finally decided that it doesn't matter whether anyone else shows up or not; I'm going to celebrate this Thursday!

If you have the opportunity this Thursday, May 29th, I hope you'll come and join me in celebrating because Jesus is the Greatest! Potluck starts at 6pm (hot dogs and beverages provided) and service starts at 7pm.

Both events will be held outdoors, weather permitting.
